Commentaires du Broker
This historic British Barge is an iron 'Calder and Hebble' Keel that was built in 1869 in Goole, Yorkshire, for the Aire and Calder Navigation Company. She worked in Yorkshire carrying grain and general cargo. Originally she had one central lug sail.
She was brought over to Manchester in the 1950's and used as a store for a painter in Manchester Docks. The present owner bought her in 1976 and converted her into their home. The family have lived aboard since 1989 and have only moved off a couple of years ago. In 1995/6 they crossed the North Sea from Boston, Lincolnshire to Ljmuiden in Holland and explored the waterways of Holland, Belgium and France. You can actually read the story of this journey in 'Snail's Pace' by Gabrielle Lorenz.
She was engined in 1956 and is believed to be Flyboat 27. There is stacks of historical documentation with the boat but due to her Iron Clinker build she will need hull maintenance every few years. The present owner owns a boatyard where she is moored and has always carried out the work but age is catching him up and she needs a new custodian.
